The Christian Worldview presented by Summit Ministries

SATURDAY, JULY 19

TOPIC: Economics Version 2008 for Christians

GUEST: Dan Celia, The Regency Foundation

Every day, dire news is reported on the state of the U.S. economy: the stock market has fallen nearly 20% since October, the U.S. dollar is as weak as water, the real estate market is in the tank, gas and food prices are sky high, borrowers are defaulting on their loans, banks are failing, the government is contemplating bailouts, and on and on it goes.

What is going on economically and how can Christians be prepared to deal with it?

It's a good thing Dan Celia will be joining us on The Christian Worldview this weekend to untangle and bring clarity to all things economic, including your questions on the aforementioned issues and your personal finances.

Dan is the executive director of The Regency Foundation, a Christian financial ministry that "exists to help corporations and individuals plan, invest, and give wisely." And what's more, The Regency Foundation is a national sponsor of The Christian Worldview! Dan is also the host of the nationally syndicated Financial Issues Live radio program and the author of a devotional book on biblical stewardship, All For the Master.

Tune in this weekend for a biblical perspective on our economic situation and being a good steward of your God-given resources.

Essay Contest Winners! Annalee from AR and Philip from MN

With almost 40 essays coming in from over a dozen states and Canada, the first Christian Worldview Essay Contest was a resounding success. But even more, the quality of the essays was excellent. It obviously took time, effort, and much thought for the students to write them, but evaluating them and choosing a winner was equally difficult!

The essays were graded on two main qualities: 1.) Content -- how well the writer addressed the essay question, and 2.) Communication -- the technical quality of the writing. The grading was weighted 2/3 towards the content and 1/3 towards the communication.

The essay question was: "How has a biblical worldview helped you overcome a challenge you have faced or are facing in your life?"

The prize is a full tuition scholarship for one male and one female student to a two-week Summit Ministries Summer Conference at the location of your choice -- a nearly $800 value!

Summit has also decided to generously offer a $50 tuition discount to a 2008 summer student conference for all who participated in the essay contest. When you register, just tell them you were a Christian Worldview Essay Contest entrant.

So without further ado, below are the 2008 winners of The Christian Worldview Essay Contest along with their essays. Congratulations to Annalee from Arkansas and Philip from Minnesota!

Female Winner: Annalee, age 19, Arkansas

Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Purpose

This man had it all. Twenty-five year-old Mark ------ was a professional athlete, and heir of the -------- -------- Company – a multimillion dollar industrial juggernaut in my town. He graduated from a private university, drove expensive vehicles, and enjoyed the comfort of multiple homes. Thick, black waves framed his tan face, and when he spoke, two rows of gleaming, white teeth shined symmetrically. His voice boomed with confidence, and his wit and charisma captivated the entire city.

Wandering through the athletics facility last spring, he stumbled into Studio #111, interrupting my ballet routine. He paused, leaned against the back wall, and watched. After class, Mark intercepted me and nervously introduced himself. As it turns out, my ballet instructor was responsible for our “chance” encounter. We exchanged phone numbers and arranged for him to meet my family.

Alas, we fell in love. It was the kind of season novelists write about, songwriters croon about, and young girls dream about. Our weekends consisted of charity balls and opulent soirées, and our pictures frequented the newspaper's society section. One moonlit night, he dropped to his knee with the dazzling ring. We selected a wedding date, booked our Caribbean honeymoon, and began furnishing our future lakeside home.

Then something happened -- a mere nine weeks before the wedding. A series of conversations revealed a monumental difference in beliefs. Raised in a Bible-bearing home, Mark professed Christianity, attended church, and lived a charitable life. But I became painfully aware that while he pleaded a strong case for religion, his lack of a concrete worldview created an irresolvable chasm between us.

My worldview represents my "glasses" for the way I perceive all of life. If Mark's lens prescription differed so greatly from my own, how could we share a vision? I cried to the Lord for wisdom, and by the grace of God realized with uncompromising certainty I could not submit to this man, nor trust him to cleanse me by the washing of water with the word (Ephesians 5:26). Furthermore, while he could easily provide for my future children financially, he could by no means raise them like arrows in the hands of a warrior (Psalm 127:4).

The world entices us to believe man's chief end is life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. May we, as believers, never be so blind! We are called to death to ourselves, service to Christ, and the pursuit of righteousness. What a joy to honor my Lord and my parents! To be as Ruth to Naomi, loyally embracing the guidance of my mother, rejoicing in honoring my father and traveling the narrow road of righteousness. What a mercy to lay my head on my pillow each evening filled with fulfillment that comes only from faithfully serving Christ. Sharpened and compelled by a strong biblical worldview, I am overcoming the desires of the flesh. I uncompromisingly embrace my duty to fulfill the great commission from the inside out, reshape our culture, and make the world's nations Christ's disciples.

Male Winner: Philip, age 19, Minnesota

One challenge that I have been facing in my life began last fall when I entered my first year of college.   I choose to attend ------- ------- in Minnesota.  It advertises that it’s “an undergraduate college firmly rooted in its Swedish and Lutheran heritage.”  Because of this, I had imagined that I was ready to begin a comfortable college experience where I could fellowship with other Christians in a non-hostile academic setting and gain a greater respect for a biblical worldview that I already had.

However, that is not what I experienced!  Most people familiar with -------- call the campus “a safe place for Christians to lose their faith.”  While I woke to a rude awakening my first week of classes by being inundated with propaganda promoting homosexual and other sexually promiscuous lifestyles, I was not afraid of losing my faith.  I had the Bible to stand firm on.  Some challenges I encountered came from both faculty and students.  I had to be tolerant, couldn’t speak out, had to attend a seminar advocating different methods of “coming out,” promotion of underage (“responsible”) drinking, and marginalization of abstinent lifestyles.

The challenges I faced of being rejected forced me to take a stand for what I believed in.  I had a desire to love on people, so I prepared myself to respond to the issues that I faced.  Silence was not an option, though that is what many Christians resort to here.  Attempts to educate myself about a biblical perspective drew me closer to God, and helped equip me to tackle discussions with these people, which I want to do more of.

Though I was rejected in many circles, this did not bother me.  With a biblical worldview, I was able to stand without fear.  I no longer felt marginalized.  I started leading.  Now I hope to work in other people’s lives.  I am President of ------- Prepare Ministries, Treasurer of the College Republicans, and involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  These roles have large responsibilities for which I am excited.  I feel the development Summit can provide for me would help strengthen my faith and build upon the foundation in my life set by Jesus Christ.

While I entered my college experience expecting a comfortable Christian experience, that is no longer my desire.  I expect to live on the edge and on the margin.  To do this, I want to equip myself to be a soldier.  I know I have enemies, but I also know that I have the sword of the spirit and the full armor of God to defend myself.  I want to go to Summit Ministries camp to equip myself to handle situations, be trained up in evangelism, and be raised up as a leader for my generation and my school.  A scholarship for this camp would be a blessing for me, one that could equip me to better share biblical truth and spark many opportunities to help other Christians who face the same struggles.
